We moved last Saturday (one week ago). But just for kicks let's start with the week before we moved...
I know I've told some of you about our sweet little neighbor, Babette. She is 93 or something and lives next door to us. We already have lots of fun stories from just two months of being around the house. Anyways, I was at work the week before we moved and she came in as a patient to our ER. Unconscious. She had fallen 5 days earlier and pulled a chest of drawers on top of her and laid in her floor helpless with a broken hip and femur. For 5 days without anything to eat or drink. I felt horrible. Granted we didn't actually live nextdoor to her yet and we had been in Macon all weekend for my cousin's wedding. But, still. It broke my heart. She doesn't have any family in town, so we had to step in a little. That was just the start. She's doing much better though.
The next day, my trusty 4Runner had a flat. No big deal, right. Well, we couldn't get it changed. And then about 8 of our friends tried. And then AAA tried. No such luck. It had to be towed. So I was car-less til the next day when I found out we had to get all new tires. This is 3 days before we move. At this point, there is still plenty that needs to be done to make our house live-able, and I hadn't even started packing up the loft.

So, the move actually goes well. Lots of helping hands. We are very grateful. Everything got packed in time, thanks to many friends. We enjoy our first night in the house.
We get home from church the next day, and literally 3 minutes after walking in the house, we hear a big crash. We walk outside to see a tree fallen on our car. It knocked out a street light, took down power lines and then decided to go for our car. I couldn't get over the fact that we had been standing there 3 minutes earlier. Neighbors heard it and ran out and helped us, laughingly saying "Welcome to the neighborhood!". We soon realized that it was Babette's tree, and that we wouldn't bother telling her yet since she was still in the hospital. Only a few dents on top of the trunk and it's completely driveable. No biggie, except we joked that our house was cursed.

Funny that we thought that was bad enough. Carson's sister, Caroline, came into town Tuesday night to help me unpack. Carson left for work early Wednesday morning and Caroline and I kept sleeping. We awoke to the most tremendous, startling noise I've ever heard. For some odd reason, all I could think of that could make that kind of noise in a house would be a fridge, so I immediately thought I'd be walking in to see the fridge on top of Caroline. Anyways, we both come running towards each other panicked and screaming (I don't have my contacts in at this point so I'm pretty blind and confused) and she tells me that she thinks a tree fell on our house. I think I'm in a dream. I don't remember much about what I said or did the few minutes after that. But somehow we manage to climb fences and limbs to get to the back of the yard to see this. This is what it usually looks like...
But, not anymore. We see this...
Another one of Babette's trees. In our yard. On our house. Day 5 of living there.
Knocked multiple holes in the roof. Took out the gutters and then an old satellite dish we wanted removed anyway. Could definitely be worse. We're just wondering what's next.

Okay, i shouldn't be laughing at your misfortune, but this is ridiculously hysterical!! I mean what in the world, Kate. You need to burn some incense and say some prayers in that house. Two trees falling on your property is SO RANDOM!! Wow. Sending up some prayers for you guys. Hang in there!!!
ReplyDeleteKATE!!!! That is terrible!!! When it rains, it pours, that's for sure. I'll make sure to keep your cursed house in my prayers :) It was so good to see y'all the other week. Hope to see you again soon!
